Models and simulation techniques for discovering diabetes influence factors
 

Concept

The MOSAIC consortium is constituted by 10 different partners from 5 EU countries that will collaborate in the definition, design, development and exploitations of the outcomes of this project.

MOSAIC aims at promoting developments around remote monitoring devices and systems and ICT tools for further exploitation of the MOSAIC products. MOSAIC will also explore the capabilities of the models to be modified for its application in other metabolic disorders, opening the door to the creation of new research lines and also for its development and further exploitation.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) is the most common form of diabetes. Sometimes called non-insulin dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes, it accounts for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes. The WHO estimates that by 2030 there will be about 550 million people suffering this disease. It is characterised by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency1, either of which may be present at the time that diabetes becomes clinically manifest. The diagno-sis of T2DM usually occurs after the age of 40 but even earlier, especially in populations with high prevalence of this disease.

MOSAIC solution has the potential to provide to the clinicians with a new approach to the diagnosis of the patients and the follow up of the chronic population with diabetes, moving towards a strategy more focused on the continuous follow up and prevention of worsening than in treatment of acute events. This tool is meant to provide large cost saving amounts in terms of avoided hospitalizations and optimization of treatments.

Objectives

  • Advancing diagnosis and prediction of T2DM (Diabetes mellitus type 2).

  • Determining external factors influencing the onset and progression of diabetes, in order to improve diagnosis, prediction and prevention.

  • Predicting the development of complications and assessing the evolution of the disease.

  • Risk-stratification of study population according to their clinical profile and the factors impacting their condition.

  • Integrating and exploring the interaction between clinical, biological and environmental factors.
